I saw Monument Valley aka Ned Younger last night at the Slaughtered Lamb, and he blew me away. I’ve never seen an audience so attentive, so inspired and the atmosphere in the room was electric, and it was easily one of the best shows I’ve been to this year.
Here’s a video of the new single, Your Cover Blown, filmed at the gig last night:
The single is being put out through Rug Recordings, and features the b-side Very First Alarm:
If you get a chance to go see this amazing artist then seriously don’t miss it, you won’t be disappointed.
Ned Younger aka Monument Valley is an artist that I’m really excited about. He reminds me of a more chilled out Jamie T (he sings, doesn’t rap), and his songs are beautiful. Here’s the B-Side, Very First Alarm, to his next single Your Cover Blown, which is being out out by Rug Recordings. If you don’t like it then I don’t like you.
I read somewhere recently that the concept for his Tongues EP came from collecting loads of random photographs from boot sales and markets, and the songs were then written as imaginary stories about the people in the photographs (via Music Savage).
Ned is one of the best storytellers I’ve heard in recent years, and he has a distinct knack for getting his point across beautifully. There’s something about his voice and songwriting that made me sit up and listen the first time I listened to Dear John Letters, which can be watched below, and even though that video was only released 3 months you ago you can already see his maturity and confidence grow as a songwriter.
He’s playing at Slaughtered Lamb on Thursday, and he’s featured on my weekly gig list which can be viewed here. Go check him out, he’s amazing.
