Golden Fable – The Interview

Who are you all listening to at the moment?

Tim: On tour I’ve been particularly enjoying Neil Young, Bert Jansch, Wild Beasts, Sarabeth Tuchek, Elliott Smith, Boards of Canada and early REM. We’ve also been to see some great new bands recently: My First Tooth, Y Niwl, Sam Airey and Joshua Ryan.

Rebecca: Tim and I spend a lot of time together, so our tastes and listening habits are very similar. At this very moment I’m listening to 6Music – a brilliant station that we both regularly listen to. Artists I’m enjoying at the moment include The Antlers, Beach House, M83 and Vetiver.

Who/what are your musical and non-musical influences?

Tim: I find it difficult to pin down any particular artists that influence the music we write. I play a lot of fingerstyle and classical guitar so the playing takes some of its cues from the likes of Bert Jansch, Leo Kottke, Tarrega, John Williams etc, but it’s all infused with our love of keyboards and beat making.

Rebecca: To a certain extent I am influenced and inspired by the music I listen to, but I would say my main musical influence is my musical background. I’ve been in choirs since a young age and was taught in a classical fashion initially. I think this has definitely affected how I approach writing melodies and harmonies, and has shaped the way I sing. The nature of our lifestyles and where we live are probably the key non-musical influences. We relish living in a rural setting and are very much inspired by our surroundings. One of the songs on the album, for example, is essentially a musical account of our ascent up a mountain called Cwm Idwal in Snowdonia.

What are your release plans for 2012?

Tim: Our next single, Always Golden, is due for release on March 5th. It is also available now through our Bandcamp page ( ). We recently finished work on our album which we hope will be released at some point this year. Keep your eyes peeled!

Do you have any plans to do any festivals this summer?

Tim: We’re playing at this year’s Greenbelt Festival. Hopefully we’ll be adding a few more to that soon.

When do you hope your album will be released?

Tim: It would be great to release it at some point this year, but at the moment we’re focusing on the next single and touring, which we’re really enjoying so far.

What’s been the highlight of your career so far?

Tim: The session for Rob Da Bank was great. It was such a privilege to go to Maida Vale and record a session in a place with such an impressive musical history. The tour we’re in the middle of at the moment has been lots of fun too – we’ve organised it ourselves and all of the promoters and bands we’ve played with have been fantastic. We’ve been so pleased with the reception and the kindness of everyone who has seen us play.

Rebecca: As Tim said the Maida Vale session truly was fantastic, and something I will always remember. Filming the videos for our last two singles was also brilliant. We’re very lucky to be surrounded by very creative and talented friends, one of which produced the videos. Other than that the lovely reviews we’ve had and the kind words from people who have come to see us play.

Where do you hope to be this time next year?

Tim: It would be great to keep building on everything we’ve achieved so far. We will keep on writing, rehearsing and touring. We truly love making music together and welcome any experiences that come with it.

Is there any artists that you’d like to collaborate with at the moment?

Tim: Collaborating is always something I’d like to try more of; whether it’s with other artists or producers or doing remixes. It would be great to work with people like Keiran Hebden, Caribou and SBTRKT. It’s a great way to learn and see music in different ways.

Anything you’d like to say to your fans?

Tim: Thank you! It’s hard to put into words how much it means when people say such nice things, come to see us or buy a CD/ T-shirt.

Rebecca: Yes, a huge thank you. The kind words, support and encouragement mean such a lot, and are very much appreciated.

Thanks to Rebecca, Tim and their manager Al for this interview. Their new single Always GoldenĀ is out today, and can be bought here.
